What we like:
The Skater is crazy stable for a small surfboard. It also edges like a twin tip because of the super thin rails. By chopping off the nose of the Skater, you get more parallel rails that help with edging. No nose on the Skater reduces weight which helps for advanced freestyle tricks. This board is so easy to ride that Naish recommends the Skater as their best beginner kite surfboard. You feel like the board is glued to your feet on the first tack. That immediately builds confidence, and you will be sending strapless tricks before you know it.
The rails of the Skater are thinner than any other kite surfboard on the market. These thin rails provide you with superior grip and no bounce. If you are light and want more stability or a board to ride in light wind, there is no problem to size up to the 5’5. The 5’5 also works well for big kiters. The Skater is built strong and can take some beatings. It rides best strapless, but can be ridden straps if you choose.
In the waves, the Skater was much better than expected. Many of the strapless freestyle kite surfboards on the market are designed to go up wind and pop for tricks. The Skater does a killer job of that, but it also has a very smooth and consistent turn on a wave face. They removed all the channeling from the tail of the Skater and we feel that this board got a lot looser and much better in the waves than previous versions. The Skater does best in the small to medium wave range. If you want to surf bigger more powerful waves, then go for the Global.
Insider info:
The Skater is build tough and it is still light. These boards are built to last and take a pounding. Most production boards are super heavy and if they are light, they will break easily. The Skater is pretty light and has been holding up well. That being said, if you land a huge jump flat, you can break any surfboard. Better the board than your knees!
Naish uses a proprietary fin box that fits FCS Classic double tab fins. When we questioned Robby why they use their proprietary fin boxes over Futures or FCS2. They said that the Naish fin boxes were much stronger and the fin boxes would not break out of the board if you hit bottom. Finding accessory FCS Classic fins is not that easy any more so you are kind of limited to the Naish fins if you don’t have big surf shop in your backyard. The stock Naish fins are really good glass/honeycomb construction so you don’t need replacements unless you loose a fin.
The Skater uses really grippy and plush front and back deck pads. Some traditionalist like wax, but we found that the front pad gives you better traction with less fatigue.
Why you want the Naish Skater:
This board is a great all around board for most kiters. You can ride fully powered and launch massive airs or get your first strapless kite session on the Skater. In the surf, the Skater will handle what most riders throw at it.
